Bacolod Vacay: Episode 2: Masskara Festival

Masskara Festival History

The festival first began in 1980 during a period of crisis. The province relied on sugar cane as its primary agricultural crop, and the price of sugar was at an all-time low.  It was also a time of tragedy; on April 22 of that year, the inter-island vessel Don Juan carrying many Negrenses, including those belonging to prominent families in Bacolod City, collided with the tanker Tacloban City and sank. An estimated 700 lives were lost in the tragedy.

In the midst of these tragic events, the city's artists, local government and civic groups decided to hold a festival of smiles, because the city at that time was also known as the City of Smiles. They reasoned that a festival was also a good opportunity to pull the residents out of the pervasive gloomy atmosphere. The initial festival was therefore, a declaration by the people of the city that no matter how tough and bad the times were, Bacolod City is going to pull through, survive, and in the end, triumph.

Its spelled as MASS-KARA, derived from the term Mass - multitude of people, and Spanish term, "cara" - faces.

The high-light of the event is Sat-Sun, there will be streetdance competition by different categories -  brands, baranggays and schools, Masskara Queen pageant, free concerts from GMA and ABS-CBN artists, etc.  The entire main road of Lacson - from Ramos St. to Capitol Lagoon was blocked for the street festivities - Electric Masskara, meaning continues, linking lights and fun.  Here are some of it, enjoy!
We were there around 7pm, we walked from Ramos to Lagoon and actually its not that far! You'll be entertained by some of the floats, stores, boom speakers, sounds, stages, maskara and different kind of kiosk and don't for get the famous sugba, inasal manok in every corner of the street!
This is just around 7-8pm and when 10pm hit the clock, the street is jampacked!
Zumba Exhibition in the street! Bongga uso din pala Zumba dito :)
Trip lang! Took this one, pang lamok eh! Lols

Cute lang nito :)

I graduated in Colegio San Agustin - Bacolod and quite surprised they have a float this year :)
Syempre nagpapicture ako :) Even bought this Minnie Mouse bow in disco light.  Wearing this while walking the street, and everybody is staring at me, weird reactions! Lols

Winner of Ms. Masskara 2012 at the middle.

Cute lang ni kuya na buhat ang higanteng mascot!

Fave part! BOOM Speakers in Techno!
We had a quick break for a dinner - foodstreet style! Ano pa - edi chicken inasal, its everywhere here! Lols

Took some mascara displays :)
We had some Gelatto sweets in Bob's Ramos St. :)

Mom and I decided not to go to City Plaza on Sat-Sun, rather we go to Mambukal Resort - it has warm Sulphur dip pool, swimming pools, 7 spring falls, and other cool activities.  Watched the live telecast of Masskara dance competition over the tv instead :)

UP NEXT! MAMBUKAL RESORT!
